Made With: Grass-Fed Tallow (Beef Tallow), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Oil, Jojoba Oil, St John’s Wort Oil, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Seed Oil

A sunburn is a UV-induced inflammatory response. The UV radiation damages the DNA of your skin cells which is why this can lead to skin cancer. Your body responds with increased redness, swelling, heat, and pain!

What sunburned skin needs is a combination of 2 things:

  1. Coolness anti-inflammatory support

  2. A lipid replacement to help your skin barrier seal and start to rebuild.

That’s why so many people are crazy abouttallow for after sun skincare. Our Soothe cream combines both aspects of after sun care by combining the cool, anti-inflammatory aspect AS WELL AS the lipid replacement.

Let’s take a closer look at the lipid replacement part of the equation.

Your skin produces its own oil called sebum. The fatty acid composition is, roughly: ~25% palmitic acid, ~25% sapienic acid (a human-specific monounsaturated fat), ~15-20% oleic acid, plus stearic, palmitoleic, and various wax esters and squalene. Total saturated content is around 40-45%; total monounsaturated is around 45-50% (Pappas A., "Epidermal surface lipids," Dermato-Endocrinology, 2009). That basically means that our sebum is a saturated and monounsaturated concentrated oil. Now let’s look at how tallow compares…

Beef tallow looks similar when analyzed. Tallow is ~26-28% palmitic acid, ~18-22% stearic acid, ~36-43% oleic acid, plus small amounts of palmitoleic, myristic, and linoleic acids (USDA FoodData Central; Daley et al., "A review of fatty acid profiles and antioxidant content in grass-fed and grain-fed beef," Nutrition Journal, 2010). That's around 50% saturated, 40-45% monounsaturated. Can you see how similar that is to sebum? That’s what makes tallow so great for after sun skincare.

Why jojoba? Jojoba provides an anti-inflammatory punch for our skin. In a study published by R. Habashy in the Pharmacological Research journal, it was found that Jojoba oil applied on irritated skin exerts anti-inflammatory activity similar to an anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling, which can be especially useful in after-sun products. We can also see that it speeds up wound healing. In a study published by E. Ranzato in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was found that Jojoba oil accelerates wound healing by stimulating collagen synthesis in in vivo tissues. The addition of just 1% Jojoba oil accelerates wound healing.

Why St. John’s Wort Oil? One of the main reasons I use this oil, is for the pain relieving properties. SJW’s anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, analgesic, astringent, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial actions make it a powerful aid for wounds, bruises, burns, sprains, and muscle pain and spasms (Hoffmann, 2003; McBride, n.d.; McIntyre, 2019; Smith, 2008; Wood, 1997). Its antiseptic properties help forestall infection in wounds and burns (Chevallier, 1996).

Why Rosehip Seed Oil? This oil has been studied for its ability to restore sunburned skin due to its high content of essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6. These fatty acids can help repair the skin barrier and lock in moisture, preventing further dehydration. The oil also has vitamin A and C which help with collagen production, inflammation and healing thanks to the antioxidant power. Rosehip oil is used in this formula to soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote a better recovery.

How to Use:

  1. Apply tallow balm while skin is still slightly damp. This helps lock in hydration.

  2. Reapply every 3-4 hours for the first day. Inflammation peaks anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after the sun exposure. Reapplication makes all the difference.

  3. Apply a coat before going to bed. Your skin does its repair work overnight.

2 oz amber glass jar
